Perspective
Perspective. It is an interesting concept. Normally, 48 degrees
in February is reason for me to complain. It is cold. It is grey. I am sick of
winter and so on. But today, 48 degrees has me smiling. Why? Perspective.
After 2 days of 28-degree weather, 48 degrees seems pretty amazing. Add
sunshine and I am all smiles! It is a simple matter of perspective. And so it is with life in general.
Transformation requires a matter of perspective. In The Gifts of Imperfection, author
Brene’ Brown says “Practicing courage, compassion and connection in our daily
lives is how we cultivate worthiness and move forward. Owning our story can be
hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.
Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky, but not nearly as dangerous as giving
up on love and belonging and joy-the experiences that make us the most
vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we
discover the infinite power of our light.”
Transformation can be difficult, even when we are willing to embrace a new perspective. We tend to want to plateau
and enjoy the predictability of routine- even when it no longer serves us.
“Courage comes when we practice courageous acts. It is like learning to swim by
swimming.” (Brene’ Brown) I highly encourage you to pick up this book. It is a
great read.
Transformation is said to be universal. The only constant is change. In the Huffington Post article below, “Transformational truths” I enjoyed the 10
truths outlined and in particular, I love this one: Circumstances are neutral.
Only you assign meaning. Ultimately, you get to decide how anything impacts you.
I have decided to assign new meaning to 48 – degrees. Today
I love it. I am thrilled to see the sun and happy for a productive day of work that I love, the opportunity to greet my awesome high school son when he gets out of school, and the chance to
practice yoga tonight with my friends.
Life is good. Transformation is a daily choice with
opportunities to practice. I invite you to transform with me. I have such a
long way to go, but I wake up every day and choose courage, compassion and
connectivity. I know there will be days where I will still grumble about 48 –
degree weather because I am secretly wishing for 75. But today, I am grateful. Grateful for the
weather and all that I have.
